Can weak institutions facilitate the advancement of excluded groups? The experience of Latin America shows that political purges of Supreme Courts facilitate the appointment of women justices when left parties are in power. However, political reshuffles produce only short-term advances for women, and do not represent a sustainable path to gender equality.
