The Failure of Chauvinism: CIPR Brown Bag Lunch

Ever since the drop of oil prices in the international market, four years ago, Venezuela has been undergoing a global and deep crisis. There are few examples of such a crisis in Latin America throughout history. This talk will address the global crisis through a historic, holistic perspective that highlights the structural causes of the society‘€™s collapse. It will also provide insight into recent political trends.

Professor Margarita López Maya is a visiting senior researcher at the Center for Inter-American Policy and Research. For more than twenty-five years she has studied political and social participation in different historical periods of Venezuela‘€™s democracy. She researches parties and popular protest in 20th century Venezuela, especially during the final years when Venezuelan society entered a deep political crisis and the once strong party system declined.
